Reader Question - Does Proactiv Skin Care Really Work?

We received a request from a Palacinka Beauty blog reader about reviewing Proactiv . Since I've never tried the 3 step system, I thought I would enlist one of our Palacinka beauty testers who battles oily skin/breakouts to do so. Here are her results:

My skin goes through ups and downs - and when it's a down turn I can really get bad acne flareups. There are a few drugstore products that I've found that when used in the right combination, and consistently, have helped keep the breakouts at bay. Most of these products contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur and/or glycolic acid. But I've never tried ProActiv, which I've heard about for years (and some of my friends have always sworn by), and after reading one ProActiv review after another, I decided to give it a go.

The basic Proactiv 3 Step Acne Treatment System consists of the Renewing cleanser, Revitalizing Toner and the Repairing Lotion. I used the entire kit as directed, twice a day. The cleanser is also a very nice exfoliator and I massaged that in carefully (note: this cleanser is not a makeup remover, so in the evening I used a product specifically for that before using the Proactiv cleanser). After cleansing I patted my skin dry and used about a quarter sized amount of the toner and finished with the repairing lotion. The cleanser and toner were very effective at drying up a lot of my excess oil, but did not irritate my skin.

After the first week, I could definitely see that some of the flare ups that had begun on my cheeks and chin, became much smaller and less inflamed, and I had much more oil control in my t zone. By week three I really did see significant improvement. I would say at this point my skin looked about 50% better. I was really pleased. Another great feature of this system is that the repairing lotion, used on it's own was great to dab on areas where I could feel a pimple coming on, and it really did a fast turn around to calm the inflammation and reduce the size. I continued using the kit for a few more weeks and was really happy with the improvement in my skin and the overall reduction in breakouts.

So was this the answer I had been looking for? Well, I decided to do a little test after my review period with the system and see how my skin would behave if I stopped using the 3-step system.

I can honestly say that the breakouts started returning again, as did the excess oil and overall problems with inflamed skin, etc. I went back on the system recently and my skin has turned around again. I now only use the three steps once a day. I can't believe it's taken me this long to get on the Proactiv bandwagon, but now that I'm on it, I'm going to be very loyal.

I would say that for anyone with very oily, problem, acne-prone skin Proactiv 3 Step Acne Treatment System is a fantastic, very cost effective option to really improve your skin. - Y. Alverez
