I was recently invited to an intimate CoverGirl event where top beauty bloggers and beauty editors were treated to Pat McGrath personally taking us through the Spring 2011 beauty trends she worked with for runway looks during the recent fashion season. She also answered questions about how to make those trends a reality for the everyday woman in her real life. It was an incredible evening to say the least!
Sidebar: If you didn't know, Pat McGrath is a makeup artist genius whose visionary looks, techniques and the products she helps develop for CoverGirl and Dolce Gabbana The Make Up are nothing short of innovative and stunning. Pat has also crafted runway and editorial looks for practically every major fashion desginer including: Valentino, Gucci, Dior, Versace, Prada and more.
The overall take away from Pat? Rules are gone when it comes to makeup - but advanced formulas and pigments mean that women have to work far less hard to create exactly the beauty look they want.
As far as the runway looks she created for the desingers, like Prada, Gucci, Valentino, Versace, Dior recently, she says that overall, the desingers really wanted to push the beauty looks this season - and she had a great time doing it!
Red, Red, Red
One of her favorite features to create was the red lip. She did it from very deep true reds, to acid neon reds to more fallish plum/berry reds (YSL), which was not usually seen for Spring.
If you want to try the look, Pat says it's easy to do in a new fun way.
"You can switch up the undertone - blue/orange/pink/brown or even purple based red, as well as the finish - matte, semi-matte, sheen or super shiny", says Pat. Pat loves to use Cover Girl Lip Perfection in Hot - as seen in one of my favorite S/S 2011 runway shows, Gucci.
Another look Pat created for shows like Versace was that of "perfect skin". She used CoverGirl Natureluxe Foundation, which she says creates that perfect look easily and without having to use lots of prep products! The Nature Luxe finish is designed to give a perfectly polished skin effect.
The Return to Color - Return to Glamour
For shows like Dior and Galliano where there was full on color on both eyes and lips. But you can translate this trend by getting inspiration from a color and then use it on only one targeted area of the face. For example, you could take an acid green or a super bright blue and line the top of the eyes only - adding "lots and lots of mascara", says Pat.
Whether it was bleached out, lightened or very bold and dark, Pat created statement making brows as part of a new trend for Spring 2011.
In real life, you can play around with using slightly darker eyebrow pencils to make a more dramatic or full brow, or use a highlighter brow pencil to get a different effect. If you really want to make eyes stand out in a new way, Pat says visit a salon that specializes in brow coloring, and try having them professionally lightened a shade or two.
As you can see, there'll be many different approaches and products to play with this spring/summer to change your look! Make sure you come back for my reviews of several new CoverGirl products Pat used during the shows like the CoverGirl Natureluxe Foundation and CoverGirl Natureluxe Gloss Balm for beautiful nude lip looks with a hint of shine. - RLB
