One of my favorite skincare brands, Dermalogica, has just reserved a slightly larger piece of real estate in my heart today.
That's because I recently attended an event for their newest initiative called FITE (Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship) which helps fund micro loans to women entrepreneurs all over the world!
And all you have to do to fund a loan is buy any one of the specially FITE-marked Dermalogica products (shown left), which will have a special code on the outer packaging that you enter on the FITE.org site.
Select "Redeem" on the site and each product code you enter will enable you to donate $1 to one woman. Once you are on the site, you can not only choose what country you want to donate the money to, but the actual woman - and read more about her and the business that she is trying to start or grow.
It's an amazing concept that Dermalogica's founder, Jane Wurwand, is very passionate about. The idea was sparked after she read the eye-opening book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide (Vintage), realized that she could make a big difference, and contacted the Kiva organization to join forces, (they handle the back end of the micro loan process with all of the participants).
Dermalogica's goal is to fund 25,000 businesses (at a minimum), but I have a feeling that many more women will be helped by this program since it's such a great way to support women through a wonderful beauty care company like Dermalogica- dominated and patronized by women. - RLB
