4 Things You're Doing Wrong With Your Makeup

This guest post is by Elena Donovan Mauer for Completely You

4 Things You're Doing Wrong With Your Makeup Feature

1. You don’t check the mirror.
Most of us ladies make frequent bathroom trips during the day. Even if you’re in a rush to get back to work (or whatever it is you’ve got going on), take a few extra moments to check your makeup. Lipstick on teeth, wayward eye shadow, and raccoon eyes are easy to fix, but you won’t know you have them if you don’t take a close look. Keep a few makeup basics in your purse or desk drawer so you have the tools you need to make touch-ups every few hours.
2. You reapply powder without blotting the oil away.
If your skin gets oily, blotting papers are essential. Always use one to blot away shine before reapplying powder. That’s because when powder mixes with the oils on your face, it can get really cakey. Blotting wicks it away and gets your skin prepped for a little powder. (Hey, without the shine, you may not even need the powder!)
3. You touch your face.
Whenever you touch your face, you transmit bacteria and oil, which can cause breakouts and skin irritation. So keep your fingers away from your skin as much as possible. Also, remember that using the same phone over and over can do the same thing, so periodically give your phone a good cleaning with an antibacterial wipe.
4. You pick, pop or nibble.
Some bad habits can really ruin your look. Hair-chewing can cause split, broken ends. Nail-biting can ruin your manicure. Popping pimples can make your skin look a mess and even cause scarring. So take the first step: Admit you have a bad habit, and train yourself to quit it! Need some help? Read more about how I broke my nail-biting habit.

Celebrity Fragrance Find - Madonna Truth or Dare

Madonna Truth or Dare Fragrance Review
Madonna Truth or Dare Fragrance
Whether or not you're a Madonna fan, I think you'll be a bit surprised by this scent.

In many ways this is a very sophisticated floral fragrance, but with that little dark "edge" that makes it a Madonna project.

The floral notes are big in Truth or Dare - Tuberose and Gardenia, and if you're a white floral fan this is going to be right up your alley.

But what gives Truth or Dare its edge to me is the lighter, drier nature of the florals and the hint of sweetness from the vanilla note that gives it some warmth.

The dry down is a bit more masculine and slightly musky with more oriental amber notes and a bit of "saltiness" which I always love in a scent. (This could be a unisex scent for sure).

All in all, this is a true fragrance lovers perfume and one that will delight you in its complexity, but also it's sensuality and polish.

As far as the packaging, I personally love the opaque white bottle and gold cap with studded detailing around the outer edges.  It really stands out among all the perfume packaging on shelves right now -  and will look lovely on your vanity. - RLB

Fragrance Find - Michael Kors Suede

Michael Kors Suede Perfume Review
Michael Kors Suede

Michael Kors' previous scents have been big on the florals, the glitz, the "big" presence...

The newest, Michael Kors Suede 1.7 oz was inspired by the sexiness of clean bare skin (not necessarily the fabric suede), and while it does share the headiness of his other scents, it also has smooth and mellow essence that I really enjoyed.

If you like floral scents, this fragrance certainly has it, but with nice touches of citrus spread throughout.  On my skin, the Tuberose and Gardenia notes stood out from the first spritz of the scent and for most of the day, but on and off the orange flower and mandarin notes came into play with the florals in a nice way.

I really enjoyed the creamy, warm and smooth dry down with the touches of sandalwood and plumeria.  This scent has a very long lasting power on me.  I would say easily 8+ hours.  This is another Kors scent that does announce itself when you walk into a room, but if you like your fragrance to make a statement that's sophisticated and sexy, while also having some restraint to it, this is the scent for you. It lends itself well to a lunch date, shopping as well as outdoor evening parties and gatherings. - RLB

5 Morning Beauty Mistakes

A Sweet Sprinkle-Effect Manicure, Courtesy of Ciaté!

This guest post is courtesy of Thefind

Ever since becoming quite the Pinterest enthusiast, I've developed an obsession with pinning all sorts of awesome nail designs. And while I'm mostly far too lazy (not to mention not nearly dextrous enough) to recreate all my creative findings on my own nails, I still can't help but to click through to cool tutorials to see how the Pinterest pros pull it off. That said, I've still always wondered how certain nail art prodigies manage to create that awesome "sprinkle" effect on their nails. Do they actually pour sprinkles on their nails after slathering them in a healthy coat of lacquer? Dip them in the spill-over after a particularly messy baking frenzy? Well, our friends at London-based Ciaté have the answer, and it's certainly much easier (and much more glamorous) than raiding your pantry!

The just-released Caviar Manicure kits, available now at Sephora for $25 a pop, provide a 2-part process to achieve the editorial-worthy effect you see in the picture above (though I'd recommend sticking to just your nails - not your lips)! Available in rainbow, black, and white, this awesome nail art manicure lasts just 48 hours... but that's 2 days of envious glances, rad-looking nails, and of course, your own collection of uploaded Pinterest pins that will definitely get you a few dozen more followers... am I right?

Drugstore Buy of the Week - Gud from Burt's Bees Orange Petalooza Body Wash

Gud from Burt's Bees Orange Petalooza Body Wash Burt's Bees has created a new line of all natural skin and body care called gud (good) and their Orange Petalooza Body Wash is one of the stand outs in the line.

If you like very fragrant body washes this is definitely one for you. It has a rich, sweet blood orange fragrance that lingers nicely on the body after rinsing.

The texture of the body wash is very thick, smooth and silky and it produced a very rich lather. It's super concentrated so just about a quarter's amount was enough for the entire body.

It's also very moisturizing. After rinsing my skin was smooth and soft. This is a great product to try for those of you who are already Burt's Bees fans and those who are looking for a nice natural body wash product! - RLB

Super Cute! - Marc Jacobs Daisy Petite Flower on the Go Duo

Marc Jacobs Daisy Petite Flower on the Go Duo Review
In this series of beauty & personal care product finds - Super Cute!- I share with you products which have innovative, artistic, fantasy, child-like, vintage and/or retro themes and an "irresistible" quality to them!

These make perfect little splurges and gifts for yourself or for the girly girl (or someone youthful in spirit!) in your life too.

Sephora.com, Inc.
With Spring in full swing and Mother's Day right around the corner, here's a "Super Cute!" pick that you can satisfy your new fragrance cravings with or gift to your mother. The Marc Jacobs Daisy Petite Flower on the Go Duo contains two of Marc Jacobs' most popular scents, Daisy Eau So Fresh and Daisy Eau de Toilette.

Eau So Fresh is a newer interpretation of Daisy that's fun, sparkly, fruity and works for almost any occasion. It's a scent that has some sweetness to it's but keeps it light with a woody base and a hint of musk which gives it a lovely dry down. For those of you that haven't yet experienced Daisy, this is also a great set. Daisy is more of a floral with a touch of sweetness and great staying power. It keeps it's freshness and has some nice green notes which give a nice balance throughout the day.

The packaging, as you can see, really makes this an easy fragrance gift to give. I love the flower shapes surrounding the spray bottles, and they're still small enough to toss in your purse or travel bag. Trust me, when you whip one out to use, you'll definitely get some compliments - on the perfume bottle - and the scent on you! - RLB

Intelligent Nutrient's Lip Delivery: Gloss That's Actually Good For You!

Calling all lipstick and lip gloss addicts! While your days of actually tasting flavored gloss straight out of the tube are hopefully far behind you (along with wearing diapers and finger-painting your parents' household walls), do you ever think of what you're inadvertently (and inevitably) ingesting by wearing so much lip product? After all, not all beauty products – especially lip glosses – are created equally, and if it's going anywhere near your mouth or on your body, shouldn't it be good for you? Intelligent Nutrients as a brand is a firm believer of the importance of being a smart beauty queen, making sure that all the ingredients in their lip products are USDA certified organic, food-grade ingredients that taste, look, and feel good for your lips.

Lip Delivery Antioxidant Gloss hydrates, softens, and smooths with anti-aging seed oil and nutrient-rich oils of acai, rosehip, black cumin, and natural fruit extracts for a flavorful, shiny finish that keeps your lips looking smooth and fabulous now and later. 100% free of any toxic or artificial ingredients that other popular lip products may contain, you can officially apply, re-apply, smooch, then re-apply some more knowing that your gloss is truly good for you!

Beauty Find - Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream

Many of you have probably been hearing the term "BB creams" more and more lately.

BB cream stands for "Beauty Balm" and more and more brands are making them. They are a hybrid of a tinted moisturizer/primer product which also tackles: oily skin, acne, evening skin tone and sun protection all in one.

I've found that one of the major standouts in this category is Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35 The first reason is color range - right now most brands only have roughly 2 shades of their BB creams - very light and medium tones. However, Smashbox now has 8 shades, all the way to Dark, which was a perfect match for me.

The second great feature is the actual formula - this BB Cream is a bit thicker than some of the others I've tried. It's closer to a lightweight creamy foundation, but still very light on the skin.

I loved how easily it was to apply (both fingers and foundation brush were great), and the lasting power was fantastic - it really didn't budge, smudge or come off in any way. It didn't clog my pores or dry out my drier parts of my face either, which was nice.

The formula is quite concentrated, so only about a dimes worth is needed for coverage. Again, it's important to note this is not a foundation - so it works best for those of you with good-to-great skin tones without too much discoloration, etc. However, this is a product which could be used in conjunction with a foundation, it needed for additional coverage, since it's also a primer/sunscreen.

The finish was very nice - Camera Ready BB Cream  is slightly dewy but still provided a great amount of oil control for my t-zone (I usually only had to do a light blot once during the entire day to freshen up).

I looked fresh, natural yet still very put together - effortlessly! This is a must have for your makeup kit. - RLB

Drugstore Buy of the Week - St. Ives Naturally Smooth Hand Cream

St. Ives Naturally Smooth Hand Cream Review The St. Ives Naturally Smooth line has just expanded with an equally effective (and fantastically priced) hand cream. St. Ives Naturally Smooth Hand Cream is formulated with natural alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliate skin but don't sting or irritate it.

As with the body lotion, within just a few days I could start seeing the results of softer, brighter skin. This is a formula which is extremely lightweight and absorbs almost instantly.

It doesn't leave a lot of shine on the skin and there's no greasiness or stickiness. I was very pleased with how much moisture my hands retained. There's a nice light slightly citrus scent that dissipates quickly as well. It's a very convenient sized flip top tube which I was able to put in any purse or travel bag.

For those of you who are fans of this brand, or just inexpensive skin/body care - what are you waiting for? Pick this one up Today. - RLB

Food Treats for Beautiful Skin

This guest post is by Abbie Kozolchyk for Completely You

Food Treats for Beautiful Skin Feature

Chocolate. Nuts. Coffee. Sugar. Salt. If we were playing “The $20,000 Pyramid” right now, you might reasonably guess, “Things that are good for you in moderation.”

Wrong answer. The truth is, there’s nothing remotely moderate about, say, being covered then cocooned in molten chocolate. Yet this increasingly common spa treatment couldn’t be better for you: Think radiant, smooth, absurdly soft skin -- to say nothing of chocolate’s antioxidant and anti-irritant properties.

Point is, no matter what the ingestible versions of these treats do to your weight, blood pressure or bone density, the topical versions induce zero guilt -- and serious beauty benefits. And some of these mesmerizing goodies even offer teeth-enhancing benefits if you do choose to please your taste buds. So it’s certainly time to indulge.

Let’s start with the granddaddy of all treats (or great-great-great-granddaddy, if you consider the millennium-traversing history of chocolate consumption in Mesoamerica). “Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, which can help reverse free-radical damage,” says New York City dermatologist Doris Day. “In addition, the inherent caffeine content has anti-irritant properties.” Hence cacao’s ever-increasing presence in body butters, balms and lotions.

But this treat is best served warm and liquid, massaged into your limbs, back and torso at a spa. One delicious interpretation is the Chocolate Experience at the Marquis Los Cabos resort in Baja California, Mexico. The highlight of this 80-minute treatment is a peppermint-infused chocolate envelopment that promises to increase endorphins.

Can’t get South of the Border? Slather on a cocoa-infused body butter after a warm shower to enhance absorption.

Caffeine in coffee beans relieves skin irritation, just like chocolate. But coffee beans’ primary benefit to your skin is exfoliation -- at least when they’re ground up and massaged on to your extremities, notes Day.

The most indulgent variation on the theme? The Xocol-Ha Wrap and Coffee Scrub at the Spa at Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where Veracruz-grown beans are ground to skin-stimulating perfection.

At home, look for natural scrubs featuring coffee extracts. Or make your own: Combine 2 cups of coarsely ground coffee, 1/2 cup of cup raw sugar or sea salt, and 3 teaspoons of massage oil. Rub it across your body in circular motions to stimulate blood flow.

Sugar and Salt

Sugar and salt are excellent exfoliants, but the sweet stuff is better for sensitive-skinned people. “It simply dissolves as you scrub,” according to Day.

Salt treatments, by contrast, can dry you out, and are consequently good for oily or acne-prone skin. Psoriasis sufferers can benefit from salt as well. “Simply -- and gently -- working some coarse sea salt over pre-moistened skin in the shower should help,” says Day.

For a far girlier take on getting gritty, check out the Magnolia Sugar Scrub at the Spa at the Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, where the granules in question are bathed in magnolia essence and various botanicals. Drug-store brand sugar scrubs can be used daily in your own shower for similar benefits at a little less indulgence.

“Nut extracts can be very hydrating to the skin,” says Day. Macadamia and almond -- two of the most easily absorbed nuts -- figure into many scrumptious skin treatments. One standout is the Ho'ala (renewing) service at the Four Seasons Maui, where your limbs are plied with a macadamia- and sweet almond-infused lavender body butter, among other delicacies.

At home, look for lotions or, if you have dry hair, conditioners that contain nut extracts. For a DYI take on conditioner, combine 3 ounces almond oil with 2 ounces olive oil and five drops of lavender oil in a bottle. Shake until the ingredients are well blended. Before you shampoo, apply as much of the mixture as necessary to coat your hair from mid-strand down. After five to 10 minutes, without wetting hair, apply shampoo directly to your hair to break up the treatment. Last, add water, suds up and follow with your usual conditioner. Repeat weekly or twice per week in case of seriously sapped strands.

It may be hard to believe, but science has found that some delectable treats can also improve your smile. Check out these fun facts:
  • Coffee drinkers are less likely to have a specific type of plaque built up on their teeth. Italian researchers point to the liquid’s tannins, which may act as a powerful plaque-blocker.
  • Cocoa contains a nutrient that can act as an inhibitor to plaque build-up, according to a landmark Japanese study.
  • Nuts contain natural fats, proteins and vitamin D that may fortify teeth and gums.
So eat up -- in moderation.

Nail Polish Find - Butter London Primrose Hill Picnic

Butter London Primrose Hill Picnic Nail Polish Review Oh, what a lovely pink this is! This Butter London shade Primrose Hill Picnic (which is also now included in the Spring 2012 Collection of new Lippy matching lip glosses!), is a medium/dark cross between fuchsia and hot pink. It reminds me of some of my favorite colored Spring tulips.

I loved how this looked against my skin and I definitely recommend it for those of you sporting a tan and with darker brown skin. With base and two coats I got the exact pink in the bottle, with a smooth, easy application and no streaking.

Butter London has always been one of my favorite lines for years for their very creative, yet still flattering, nail shades and fantastic, long wearing formulas made without

The finish has a nice sheen, and adding top coat certainly kicks the finish up to a high shine.

This shade is perfect for spring/summer and beach-hopping pedicures too! - RLB

Beauty Find - Smashbox Cover Shoot Kit

Smashbox Cover Shoot Kit Review Smashbox has put together one of their best kits, just in time for spring. Smashbox Cover Shoot Kit is fantastic for a bronzy/brown or deep blue/grey eye, soft cheek and nude lip. Not only are the products in perfect, wearable shades, but the textures and pigments are fantastic whether you're creating a night time look, doing an actual photo shoot or more of an every day/day time look.

The eyeshadow palettes are very smooth, silky and perfect for blending. They're SO pigmented that I barely even needed to touch the brush to the pan and I had more than enough for my entire eyelid. The darker shades also work very well as liners.

The creamy lip color was one of my favorites. It applied perfectly smoothly, was almost as moist as a lip balm and had a nice dewy finish. The pencil also works with a gloss if you want more of a shine. It's a lighter peach color that may be too light for those of you with darker skin/more pigmented lips, this can easily be paired with a deeper nude brown lip color and topped off with their included shimmery pink gloss for a nude lip effect.

The mascara is fantastic! 2 coats with the great sized brush and all of my lashes were super long, full and lush with no flaking or smudging. The pan eyeliner liners are very smooth and long wearing. I also love having 2 brushes in 1 for the shadows/liners (that are very good quality), included.

And finally the cream blush, while it may not be deep enough for all darker skin tones, (it's a medium peachy pink), will actually work well with deeper pinks/orange blushes as a highlighter/illuminator. - RLB

Included in the Kit:

* Cream Eye Liner Duo in Double Feature
* Cream Cheek Color in Callback
* Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio in On The Cover
* Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio in Editorial
* Lip Enhancing Gloss in Tabloid
* Full Exposure Mascara
* Creamy Lip Color in Strike-a-Pose
* Double Ended Brush #7 and #9

Urban Decay Super Saturated Lip Color For Lips That Pack a Punch!

This guest post is courtesy of Thefind

Urban Decay Super Saturated Lip Color For Lips That Pack a Punch Feature

I've only just begun testing the waters of regular lipstick-wearing (in all my years of being a beauty addict, I've always been more of a gloss girl!), and so far I've been having fun experimenting with this season's bold, bright shades by finally mustering up the courage to wear them in public. However, through all my experimentation, it's become abundantly clear that not all lipsticks were created equally – a fact that's especially apparent when you're dealing with rich shades that are meant to be so boldly saturated and as smooth, even, and clean-looking as possible! I could keep shopping around, testing lipstick brand after lipstick, but I don't exactly have endless beauty-buying funds (don't we all wish?), plus one particular product I've encountered already may just have it all!

Urban Decay Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color comes in chubby pencil form, so upon first application you'll probably be surprised at how smoothly and color-intensely it applies. Shiny like a gloss yet saturated like the richest lipstick (the name of the product is no joke!), it looks fresh and moisturized and never heavy, and you don't have to constantly reapply in multiple coats to get your desired high-impact finish. My only complaint is that they don't come in more colors! If you like Lipstick Queen's Chinatown glossy pencils, you'll love these amped-up lookalikes from Urban Decay!

Drugstore Buy of the Week - Olay Clean & Mild Make-Up Remover Cloths

Olay Clean & Mild Make-Up Remover Cloths Review Now there's a quick, easy cleansing solution for sensitive skin.

Olay Clean & Mild Make-Up Remover Cloths are perfect to remove makeup (including eye makeup) and provide a fresh clean that doesn't irritate skin.

The cloths are moist but not overly wet, and provided a nice layer of moisture even as they removed my makeup. There's no real fragrance and the texture of the cloths is very soft. For full makeup I used both sides of one cloth successfully, but did find that with more long wearing makeup I needed two. After using my skin felt very refreshed and no trace of product. The cloths contain aloe and vitamin E, and really did feel soft and soothing to my skin.

So now, whether you're freshening up your day to night makeup, need to cleanse your skin after a flight, a work out or a long night, you can use these wipes and pamper your skin at the same time. - RLB

4 Beauty Mistakes You’re Making in the Shower

This guest post is by Elena Donovan Mauer for Completely You

4 Beauty Mistakes You’re Making in the Shower Feature

I stepped out of a wonderfully steamy shower this morning, and as I waited for the mirror to defog, I thought, “I know I wasn’t supposed to do that!” That’s because hot water really dries out your skin, and I’m paying for it with the itchies now! (Here, a derm explains why this happens.) But there are some other things you might be doing wrong as well. Are you guilty of any of the following beauty foibles?

Shower Slipup No. 1: Washing your face before your hair

If you’ve got oily or acne-prone skin, hair conditioner can trigger breakouts near your hairline. So wash and condition first, then wash your face thoroughly.

Shower Slipup No. 2: Using the wrong cleanser

Did you know foaming facial cleanser can actually be drying? And exfoliating washes that contain fruit pits can irritate and cause microscopic tears beneath your skin. The face wash you use should be creamy and customized for your skin type. If you need extra exfoliation, pick something with gentle sloughing power that’s specially formulated for the face.

Shower Slipup No. 3: Not exfoliating

I’m talking body, not face. Find a gentle way to get rid of dry, dead skin cells. But don’t go too abrasive with a rough loofah. A gentle bath pouf or hydrating body scrub should be all you need. Blot dry with a towel instead of rubbing. Follow up with a great moisturizer and your skin will feel super-silky.

Shower Slipup No. 4: Staying in too long

Keep your shower to 15 minutes or less. Letting the water flow longer than that can strip the natural moisture from the top layer of your skin, causing the same problem as hot water can: total dryness! Instead, set a timer and be sure to hop out before you get all pruney, which is about the same time your skin will start getting drier.

Body Care Find - Yves Rocher Minceur Café Vert D-14

Yves Rocher Minceur Café Vert D-14 Review For those of you who have had good results with body contouring products with caffeine (it provides a draining effect on the skin), this latest innovation from Yves Rocher is worth looking into.

The company spent four years researching the effects of the Green coffee bean to reduce the appearance of fat, and slimming/firming effects on the skin to create Yves Rocher Minceur Café Vert D-14. They found that the particular variety of Green Coffee Bean researched had the highest concentration of the active concentration of caffeine which decreases the volume of fat cells (3x as effective as standard caffeine).

Well that sounded remarkable to me, but as you know, the proof is always results...

I found that this formula does indeed have a noticeable effect on the firmness of skin in areas like the upper leg, thighs and after using 2x day for 2 weeks, as they advise, I was pretty pleased with the results. I could see smoother skin overall, the areas felt and looked tighter as well. The gel/lotion formula is a light cream color, lightweight, has a great fresh scent and is also moisturizing. It didn't feel sticky or interfere with any other products I may have been using. I've continued to use it after the test period and the results have remained consistent.

If you're using this type of product you must keep in mind 1) If you have significant amounts of fat this is not a instant miracle; 2) watching your diet and being as active as possible of course enhances the results.

So since we've got a couple of months before real swimsuit season begins, give this a try to be in your best possible shape! - RLB

Organic Beauty Find - Aubrey Organics Creme de la Shave White Tea and Citrus

Aubrey Organics Creme de la Shave White Tea and Citrus Review Here's a find that both men and women will both love!

Aubrey Organics Creme de la Shave White Tea and Citrus
is a rich shave cream perfect for face or body. It's extremely moisturizing and contains rich fruit extracts for extra skin care.

I loved how smooth, creamy and silky this shave cream is. I only had to add just a little water, and the cream glided on. Please note this is not a "foaming" formula, but more like a thick, creamy lotion. It's also very concentrated, so about a quarter's worth goes a long way on arms, legs. bikini area, etc.

The scent is also very refreshing and does indeed smell like White Tea and nice blend of lime/lemon notes.

It rinsed off easily and left my skin very moisturized and smooth. This is a great formula for those of you prone to ingrown hair as well as with drier skin.

The shaving creme is also Vegetarian and Vegan. - RLB

Defined, Lengthy Lashes With Eyeko Skinny Brush Mascara!

This guest post is courtesy of Thefind

Eyeko Skinny Brush Mascara Review

As a compulsive collector of all things beauty-related, I've tried more than my share of mascaras. While I do have a few select favorites, I admittedly have yet to find one perfect all-purpose mascara that manages to do it all: lengthen, define, and thicken my lashes (yes, even those little ones in the corners!) in a clump-free, smudge-free, flake-free way. I know, it sounds like a lot to ask for, but Eyeko's handy creation has me convinced that it's not a completely unrealistic expectation! Their Skinny Brush Mascara packs a serious punch despite the tiny applicator, providing maximum control while defining lashes (even in those hard-to-reach corners!).

Furthermore, the brand is strongly in favor of treating your lashes with as much love as you'd give the rest of your hair (I mean, why not, right?), so this fabulous product is all about conditioning with pro-vitamins for thicker and more lush lashes, and its highly-pigmented glossy formula coats lashes completely without drying them out or making them brittle. Plus, it even comes with a "smudge" shield to ensure a less messy application, even for the clumsier makeup lovers like me!
