7 Incredible Ways to Use Coconut Oil

There are a couple of beauty items I’m never without: under-eye concealer (to cover those hereditary dark circles), lip balm (to feed a lifelong addiction to a moisturized kisser) and coconut oil for the rest of me.

Among the lotions and potions that make up my beauty arsenal -- I’ve got treatments for puffy eyes, tonics for sensitive skin, and balms for dry and flaky parts -- sits a humble jar of organic coconut oil
I use it as:
1. Post-shower body lotion, slathering it on every bit of my body before drying off. Coconut oil leaves a subtly tropical fragrance on the skin.
2. Hair moisturizer. I rub the oil into my scalp and throughout my hair, focusing on the ends if they are particularly dry. I then wrap my hair in a towel and wait 15 minutes before washing out. (Note: It make take a few washes to rinse out all of the oil). Conditioning with coconut oil leaves hair moisturized and shiny. Yes, shiny!
3. Hydrating bath. A couple of tablespoons of coconut oil in a warm bath is relaxing and moisturizing. And no need to slather on lotion when you get out!
4. Massage oil. Coconut oil is an excellent massage oil, lubricating quickly and absorbing into the skin post-rubdown.
5. Gentle makeup remover. I dab a cotton swab into coconut oil to remove stubborn mascara or eyeliner.
6. Homemade body scrub. I add a quarter cup of sugar to half a cup of coconut oil and rub it across my arms, legs and torso before rinsing off with warm water.
7. Dietary addition. When possible, I cook with coconut oil, using it instead of olive oil, adding it to baked goods and drizzling it on salads. Coconut oil is high in lauric acid, which is packed with anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. Coconut oil is also full of medium-chain fatty acids or medium-chain triglycerides, which are converted more quickly to energy instead of being stored as fat in the body.
