Beauty Book Find - Lauren Conrad Beauty

I admit I've never seen an episode of the MTV show, The Hills, but over the years I've come to admire Lauren Conrad and her sense of style - and branding that has created a mini-empire of style books, fiction novels about young Hollywood  - the "LA Candy" and "Fame Game" series, a clothing line - and now a very anticipated beauty book, Lauren Conrad Beauty.

The book, which is beautifully designed and photographed, is first and foremost for those who are looking for beauty tips, how to's and suggestions on beauty products (and of course are big fans of Lauren's personal style).  It's perfect for a teen or college student who is just starting out with exploring beauty products, and makes a great beauty gift idea.

But the book goes a bit beyond the basics for those of us who have more experience with beauty as well.  It's very well thought out with the inclusion of models from varying ethnic backgrounds to detail step-by-step instructions on foundation and concealer application, eye shadow, brow grooming and bronzer application, for example.

The book is broken up into two sections: "Prep" which lays out all of the basics of makeup, skincare, makeup tools, hair, fitness (and even a handy section of handling and easing stress to look and feel your best).  The second half, "Play" shows multiple pretty daytime makeup looks (including Lauren's own personal techniques like the famous "Cat Eye" she's known for), and party looks.  The section also details how to customize her looks for dark skin, mono lids, freckles, pale skin and olive skin tones.  The section for hair takes a similar approach, with sections on how to choose the right hair tools, prevent hair damage and great techniques for making curly hair, coarse hair and color treated hair look it's best.  I also liked  the several pages with pretty photographs with detailed instructions, of stylish braids that are easy to recreate. There's also a nice little section, "Nails" - which has fun manicure ideas and detailed how-to's as well as tips for nail maintenance.

Throughout the book are informative sidebar sections on the pages which include stories and suggestions from Lauren. They are called "One Simple Thing You Can do Every Day" on how to not only improve your looks, but your outlook on life, which I found a nice touch as well. - RLB
