Soli Davis – has been working in multiple aspects of the Aesthetic and Cosmetic Industry for over 20 years. A licensed aesthetician and reflexologist, she has worked in the retail and spa arena as well as with public relations and beauty editors. She has been mentioned in several publications (i.e. W Magazine, Essence, New York Times Magazine) and has also worked in Product Development, Marketing and Training. “Education is a love for me and an empowering force which facilitates change and self- improvement. This has always been an important part of my career in Cosmetics and Aesthetics. I believe that having the information you need and to know why you do certain things to your skin will help you to create the habits that will keep your skin healthy and beautiful", says Soli Davis. "Over the years I've found that many of the same questions and issues come up with my clients. Whether a Celebrity or not, we all deserve to have the skin of our dreams and feel like one, glowing and radiant with our own natural beauty. This takes a bit of work, discipline (no sleeping in your makeup!) and certain tips and tricks. Here are a few of the ones that I've shared with my clients that have helped to change the condition of their skin and led them to either discovering the beautiful skin that was waiting to emerge or optimizing the beauty already there!" As an Aesthetician who integrates healing modalities into my facial treatments, I believe in “The Beauty of Balance". This belief is supported by an appearance that is radiant, line-free, healthy and happy! Genetics play a part for me, as being Asian, Black and Native American certainly has the benefit of genes that age well. One's ability to embrace, improve or transcend one's birthright can be aided with some empowering information! The 5 steps to the Beauty of Balance Nature, Nurture, Unveil, Enhance/Balance and Protect are the Five Ways that I look at a holistic regime that helps me to achieve The Beauty of Balance. Nature: Diet, hydration and a proper cleansing regime are the beginning steps to honoring the nature of your skin and helping it to give you the appearance you've been dreaming of. What you eat shows! A Chocolate body treatment or Champagne Facial may be wonderful but unfortunately too much of either in your diet leave imprints on your skin! All those wonderful anti-oxidants we put on our skin we should also put in our bodies, increasing beta-carotene's ( sources include: carrots, leafy greens, oranges, cherries, pomegranates), Alpha Omega 3 fats( salmon and avocado) and having a balanced diet will help our bodies to be healthier and that balance is revealed on the surface of the skin. Be aware of food allergies: Common Culprits like dairy, gluten (wheat), caffeine and sugar can throw your body off balance and may trigger skin conditions such as acne. We all know that we're supposed to drink more water! Be aware that coffee, black tea, and soda do not count in your need for daily hydration. In fact, if you indulge in a lot of caffeinated beverages you need to drink more water to counter act the dehydrating effects from the caffeine. Try not to drink cold water – drinking it at room temperature makes it a lot easier to get down the recommended 8 -12 glasses a day. 1: Put fresh lemons and/or limes in a large water bottle and sip on that all day; it makes it more refreshing/ or less boring (for those who have water issues) and allows you to regulate the amount of water you drink! 2: If you drink the same amount of water for 10 days, your bladder will self-regulate and you can stop running to the bathroom. Contrary to popular belief, drinking water does not hydrate the skin but rather detoxifies your body, thereby helping to improve the health of your skin. Cleansing properly is one of the most important steps towards skin health. Nothing penetrates dirt and leaving your pores congested with old makeup, oils and pollution will not only increase breakout but also will not assist in the general repair that should happen every evening. Laszlo's cleansing ritual is a bit time consuming but the splashing and daily deep cleansing, (to be done twice a day) increases circulation, exfoliation and pore refinement. Whether you're using Laszlo's or another cleansing and toning system, this step gets rid of the toxins on the surface of the skin in the morning( all evening is spent with your body riding itself of toxins and repairing itself) and the effects of the day( pollution, makeup, dirt and oil) at night. Having normal to combination skin, proper cleansing is important to me. I always begin with a cleansing water to remove my makeup followed by either a gel or non-soap cleanser. Some of my favorite cleansers are: Nurture As women, we need to consciously nurture ourselves. There are many studies that show that when a woman takes care of her self, society wins. Her children are happier, her romantic partner is happier, her co-workers are happier. Her life functions more effectively and productively; and most importantly, she is happier and healthier! A happy woman is a glorious sight and spreads joy and curiosity (don't we all want to know why that woman is glowing?). Find something that you love to do- reading, laughing with your girlfriends (have a girl's night out or brunch), taking a bath with wonderful bath salts, playing sports, restoring your sense of visual beauty in museums; but find something that you do just for yourself to give yourself joy. Joy is very sexy and wonderful for your health; it also helps you to remember that life is amazing and can be full of miraculous moments, which are so important during this challenging time in which we live. My favorites are: Aqua Exercise, Tai Chi, Dancing and listening to live music. They help me to celebrate my inner child and I remember to have fun and be joyous! Unveil If you have rosacea or general sensitivity use a non-abrasive Exfoliator. Gentle Enzyme Exfoliator, Gommage and Silk Peeling Powder are some other ways to exfoliate. Some of my favorite non-abrasive exfoliators are:
There are some wonderful new organic products as well, but that's coming up in another article! Enhance Your skin's natural barrier from the elements is a delicate thing. As we get older, get stressed, or are in challenging physical environments (traveling, heating, air conditioning, etc.) this barrier can become compromised and dehydrated which creates the opportunity for increased breakout and accelerated signs of aging. We can correct this imbalance by using the proper products and having a dedicated regime. Take the time, invest in your self, a moment of prevention now will pay off later in the appearance of your skin! Aren't we all worth it? Creating a ritual of 2-5 minutes for your self in the morning and evening is a wonderful way to center yourself and take time to check in! Put it on your schedule and understand that it's the consistency of how you use your products that makes them effective and gives you the results that you want and paid for! Some of my favorite moisturizers are:
Protect There is no" melanin out"; the amount of melanin in your skin is no guarantee that you will not be effected by the disappearing ozone. Skin Cancer is going up even in women of color at an alarming rate, take the time to make sure that you and your family are protected from the environment. We often forget about sunscreen in the winter months and during rainy days but UV rays are actually more damaging with clouds than without, and more dangerous then because we don't feel the effects of burning or sun damage. There are now new sunscreen products on the market; Mexoryl XS has opened up a whole new degree of protection. Available for years in Europe and the rest of the world the FDA has just approved it for the US Market. Some to try are:
There are also transparent zinc oxides and Skin Ceutical's is one of my favorites because it doesn't show on my skin nor does it cause me to break out. Natura Bisse also has a wonderful anti-aging oil free sun block of 30 and Sun Defense Sport that meets the Australian Standard (The product does not allow more than 10% of UVA Rays to penetrate the skin). Please don't forget to tell your guys how important it is! The scalp, neck and ears are sensitive areas and reminding them that sunscreen needs to be re-applied, especially while playing sports is important!
